My Take
Glyn Johns is, frankly, one of the most important people most listeners have never heard of. Born in Epsom in 1942, this English engineer and producer shaped records by the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Kinks, Eagles, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, an almost absurd roll call. What I find remarkable is how his hands-on, capture-the-room philosophy defined the sound of an entire era of rock. The 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction was overdue recognition for someone who stayed behind the glass. To me he's proof that the engineer can be as much an artist as the band.
