My Take
What I admire most about Jimmy Iovine is that he never stopped being an engineer at heart, even as he became one of the most powerful executives in music. Most label bosses come from the business side; Iovine came up with his hands on the faders, which is why his instincts about a record always felt earned rather than calculated. Co-founding Interscope and shepherding 250-plus albums is staggering, but the through-line is taste forged in the studio. To me he represents a vanishing breed: the operator who can hear what a song needs and then build an empire around it.
