Goran Bregović

Goran Bregović is one of those artists who made a regional sound feel universal. Bringing Balkan gypsy brass and folk melody to Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall and l'Olympia, he turned the music of the former Yugoslavia into something the whole world could feel. What moves me is how his film scores hold grief and celebration in the same breath, earthy and exuberant at once. That he also paints only confirms the impression of a restless, complete creator. His work stays with you long after the last note.
