My Take

I genuinely did not expect to be as moved as I was watching a twelve-year-old from suburban New York strum a ukulele on America's Got Talent and just — own the room. Grace VanderWaal won that show in 2016, but what struck me wasn't the victory, it was the songs she wrote herself, raw and emotionally specific in a way that most adult songwriters can't pull off.
