My Take

Guy Berryman is the kind of musician I instinctively respect: the steady backbone who never needs the spotlight. As Coldplay's bassist he locks down a groove that lets the band soar, and knowing his early inspirations were James Brown, the Funk Brothers and Kool & the Gang explains so much about that pocket feel. What fascinates me is the rest of him, the University College London background, the photography, the design and business ventures. He clearly has a curious, self-contained creative life beyond the band. I'll always champion the craftsman who builds the foundation everyone else stands on.
