My Take

Helen Mirren is my standing argument against the idea that an actor's prime has an expiration date. She conquered television with Prime Suspect, the stage with a Tony, and film with her Oscar-winning turn in The Queen — a triple crown almost nobody achieves. What I admire most is her refusal to be dignified in a boring way: she will play a monarch one year and an action heroine the next, with the same total commitment. There is steel underneath the elegance, perhaps something inherited from her Russian roots. Every time I watch her work, I feel the craft of acting being defended by its very best lawyer.
