Hideaki Nitani

What catches my eye about Hideaki Nitani is the route he took: a Doshisha University dropout from Maizuru in Kyoto who started out as a radio announcer in Sasebo and then moved into acting. That background never really left him. Even in action pictures, he carried himself less like a brawler and more like the adult in the room — a man whose authority came from his voice and his stillness rather than from motion. Japanese postwar cinema had plenty of young rebels; it needed people who could stand opposite them and hold the frame steady, and that turned out to be his specialty. Watching him now, decades later, I find that kind of presence harder to come by. Screen charisma today tends to be loud. His was the opposite — measured, unhurried, faintly formal. He died in January 2012, a few weeks short of his eighty-second birthday, and what he left behind is essentially a template: how a grown man is supposed to occupy a scene.
