Hideto Asamura

Hideto Asamura is a quietly unusual player, and I mean that as praise. He was born in Osaka, yet his professional life has been spent in Saitama and then Sendai, so a fair number of Kansai fans are still mildly annoyed they never got to claim him. The combination is what makes him interesting. He hits like a corner slugger, but he has spent his career in the middle of the infield, and infielders who produce that kind of power are genuinely rare in Japanese baseball. He also has a knack for coming up with runners on base, which is something you feel in a game before you can prove it in a spreadsheet — you watch the opposing pitcher's body language change. He does not talk himself up. He simply turns out to be there again every year, first with the Saitama Seibu Lions and now the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. Over a long career, that beats fireworks.
