Hiroshi Yamamoto

Two words sit side by side on this profile: boxer and comedian. I kept re-reading them, waiting for one to cancel the other out. It never happened. Hiroshi Yamamoto, born in 1978 in Ora District, Gunma Prefecture, built his name in comedy and then went and put himself inside a boxing ring, which is about the least forgiving place a public figure can choose to stand. Comedy at least lets you edit the tape. A fight does not. What I find interesting is not the novelty of the combination but the refusal to hedge it. Plenty of entertainers take up a sport and keep it comfortably at the hobby level, where nobody can score them. Choosing the version with an official record attached says something about temperament. He is a member of the comedy trio Robert, and through a television project he passed the professional boxing test on his second attempt and won his one professional bout by knockout. That pairing tells you more about him than a longer list of credits would.
