Hiroto Saiki

Hiroto Saiki was born in Kobe in November 1998, went to Suma Shofu High School because no baseball powerhouse came calling, and now pitches for the Hanshin Tigers from a 188-centimeter frame. The geography matters more than it appears to. Kobe is Hanshin country, and a kid born there who ends up on that mound is living the version of the story local fans imagine for themselves. Tigers supporters are the loudest and least patient following in Japanese baseball, closer in temperament to European football crowds than to anything American, and they are unforgiving toward pitchers who cannot handle Koshien in October. He can. The middle stretch of his career went to a serious elbow injury and the long, dull rehabilitation that follows one. Plenty of tall, hard-throwing young arms vanish at precisely that point and are quietly forgotten. He came back and made himself the front of a rotation instead. I am drawn to athletes who are boring off the field and unmissable on it. Saiki gives a hitter very little - a fastball delivered downhill from 188 centimeters, and no apparent interest in explaining himself. I consider that a fair trade, and I would rather read a short profile of a pitcher like him than a long one about almost anybody else.
