Hitomi Nakahara

Hitomi Nakahara was born on 22 July 1936 in Taitō-ku, Tokyo, and she is still with us. Sit with that arithmetic for a moment. She was born before the Pacific War, and she became an actress in a Japan that was rebuilding itself — the decades when the domestic film industry was at its loudest and most productive. People who worked through that period and are still here are not a large group anymore. The record lists her height as 150 centimetres, which was small even for the screen of that era. I mention it because presence on film has never correlated much with physical size; whatever makes an audience look at one face instead of another comes from somewhere else entirely. She joined Toei as one of its very first New Face recruits, debuted on screen in 1954, and was known to audiences by the nickname Bambi. What I can offer is respect for a working life that has now spanned most of the history of Japanese cinema.
