My Take

Howlin' Wolf is, to me, one of the foundational voices of American music. Born Chester Burnett in rural Mississippi, he stood at the very front of the shift from acoustic Delta blues to electrified Chicago blues, and that growling, unmistakable voice still raises the hair on my arms. His 1991 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction feels almost belated given how thoroughly later rock musicians mined his catalogue. What I value most is the raw, unpolished emotion he never sanded down. Wolf reminds me that the most influential artists are often the least concerned with being palatable.
