Hozumi Hasegawa

Three weight classes. That number gets thrown around so casually in boxing writing that it stops registering, and with Hozumi Hasegawa I think it should register. Bantamweight, featherweight, super bantamweight — each one meant rebuilding his body and then walking into a room full of strangers who all hit hard. He held the WBC bantamweight title from 2005 to 2010, five straight years at the top of one of the sport's deepest divisions, and defending is the part nobody applauds properly. What draws me to him is the absence of theatre. He turned professional in 1999 and fought until 2016, and I cannot recall him building his name on anything other than what happened once the bell rang. In an era when a loud microphone often outsells a good jab, a quiet man from Hyōgo simply kept winning, and that is why I still find him worth reading about.
