My Take

Hugh Laurie is my favorite argument against pigeonholing performers. A man who built his name on sketch comedy with Stephen Fry then convinced America he was a misanthropic genius diagnostician, with an accent so seamless many viewers never suspected he was English. Back-to-back Golden Globes for House would be career enough, but he also plays blues piano well enough to tour and record. What I admire most is the melancholy intelligence under all of it; his comedy has sadness in it and his drama has wit, and that double exposure is what makes every Laurie performance feel fuller than the script on the page.

Overview

James Hugh Calum Laurie (; born 11 June 1959) is an English actor, comedian, and musician. Laurie first gained professional recognition as a member of the English comedy double act Fry and Laurie with Stephen Fry. Fry and Laurie acted together in several projects during the 1980s and 1990s, including the BBC sketch comedy series A Bit of Fry & Laurie and the P. G. Wodehouse adaptation Jeeves and Wooster.
