Hyokkorihan

Hyokkorihan is a case study in how comedy works in the social media era. The act is almost nothing: pop your head out from behind something in time with the music. That is it. And precisely because it is nothing, everyone could copy it, and copying is what made it spread across Japan. He did not go viral in spite of the simplicity. He went viral because of it. Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1987 and a Waseda University graduate, he has a background that reads more studious than the bit suggests, which makes me suspect the simplicity was engineered rather than stumbled upon. Finding the smallest possible gesture that an entire country can reproduce is a harder design problem than writing a clever routine. The cruelty of that success is its shelf life. A joke everyone can perform is a joke everyone tires of, usually within a year. What interests me more than the boom is the work afterward, when the novelty is gone and you still have to walk onto a stage. That part gets no headlines and takes considerably more nerve.
