Isao Kōda

I've got a real soft spot for guys like Isao Koda. He came out of Higashisonogi, a quiet little Nagasaki town tucked between the hills and the sea, and clawed his way into pro baseball as a pitcher, which to me is already a whole story before you even get to the box scores. I don't care for puffing up flashy anecdotes I can't verify, but the plain fact that a kid from a small town decided to make a living throwing a baseball moves me. Nagasaki folks strike me as stubborn and steady, and I'd bet Koda was the type who just quietly stared down the ball, day after day. That kind of silent grit? I'm all in.
