My Take

Goalkeeping is a thankless trade, which is exactly why I find Iván Villar so easy to root for. A Galician from Aldán guarding the net for his local club Celta de Vigo, he embodies the romance of a hometown product earning the number one shirt. At 183 cm he is not a towering presence, so he wins his battles through reflexes and reading the game rather than raw size. Keepers can make ten brilliant saves and still be defined by one error, yet they keep standing in that lonely spot. Born in 1997, he is just entering his prime, and I will quietly cheer him on.
