Jacques Charrier

What moves me about Jacques Charrier is the second act. Plenty of actors simply fade when the spotlight moves on; he deliberately walked away from it, trading cinema for the quieter disciplines of painting and ceramics. Born in Metz in 1936, he had the looks and the credits of a French screen star, plus producing work behind the camera, yet he clearly valued making things over being seen. There is a stubborn integrity in choosing the studio over the red carpet, and his long life, which ended in September 2025 at 88, reads like proof the choice suited him. I find that trajectory quietly admirable.
