My Take

James Herbert is, for me, the engine room of modern British horror. With debut shockers like The Rats and The Fog he proved that pulp dread could be both visceral and serious, selling fifty-four million copies along the way. I respect that he designed his own covers and publicity, treating the whole book as his canvas rather than just the words. The OBE and the World Horror Convention Grand Master Award felt earned, not ceremonial. He died in 2013, but trace almost any thread of uncompromising English horror and you arrive at him. Even as a squeamish reader, I find his work hard to put down.
