My Take
Jane Morris is too often reduced to a face, the Pre-Raphaelite ideal staring out of Rossetti's canvases. What interests me far more is that she did not stay on the passive side of the easel. As an embroiderer in the Arts and Crafts movement, she was a maker as well as a muse, producing rather than merely being consumed by the art around her. For a woman of the mid-1800s, that shift from object to creator carries a quiet defiance I find admirable. I would rather remember her hands at work than only her image.
