My Take

Jeff Tweedy is, for my money, one of the most honest songwriters America has produced. From Uncle Tupelo's alt-country blueprint to Wilco's restless reinventions, he has never settled into a comfortable formula. What I admire most is his refusal to hide his flaws; the cracked voice, the anxiety, and the doubt all live inside the songs rather than being polished out. His books and poetry extend the same project of making vulnerability useful. Plenty of artists chase relevance, but Tweedy chases truth and lets relevance catch up. Decades in, he still writes like someone with something at stake, and that is the highest compliment I can give a veteran musician.

Overview

Jeffrey Scot Tweedy (born August 25, 1967) is an American musician, author, and record producer, best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the band Wilco. Tweedy, originally from Belleville, Illinois, began his music career in high school with his band The Plebes along with Jay Farrar, also in the band. The Plebes later became the alternative country band Uncle Tupelo.
