My Take
What strikes me about Joan Chen is her refusal to stay in one lane. She crossed from Shanghai to Hollywood, became an international face through Twin Peaks, then turned around and won a Golden Horse for directing with Xiu Xiu. Actors who command both sides of the camera at the highest level are genuinely rare, and her awards span supporting and leading roles across multiple countries. To me she represents a creative restlessness that I find deeply admirable: she didn't wait for the right story, she went and told her own. That kind of authorship is exactly what makes a career feel earned rather than given.
