Joanna Hogg

Joanna Hogg is one of those filmmakers I admire precisely because she refused to rush. She didn't make her feature debut until she was 47, and when she finally did, the result was startlingly assured. What moves me about her work, especially The Souvenir diptych, is the courage to mine her own memory and present it with such restraint. She trusts silence and stillness in a way few directors dare, letting discomfort linger until it becomes revelation. To me she proves that a quiet, patient voice can cut deeper than spectacle, and that arriving late is no obstacle to lasting greatness.
