Joe Holmes

Joe Holmes never became a household name, and I think that says more about the cruelty of the spotlight than about his playing. Inheriting Ozzy Osbourne's guitar chair after Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde is one of metal's most pressure-loaded jobs, and Holmes held it for six years. To me, that quiet durability is the real story. He has always struck me as a player who serves the music rather than his own legend, and his ongoing work with Farmikos shows a musician who simply loves the craft. I have a soft spot for that kind of unglamorous dedication.
