My Take

John Carpenter is one of those rare directors who makes you feel the dread before anything even happens — and the wild part is he's often writing the music doing exactly that to you himself. The man composed the Halloween theme, one of the most recognizable and unsettling piano riffs in cinema history, and did it on a shoestring. His whole run through the late '70s and '80s — Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, They Live — is just a masterclass in doing more with less: atmosphere over spectacle, tension over jump scares, subtext over exposition. The Thing in particular is a sci-fi horror gut-punch that only gets better with age. He's criminally underrated as a composer and genuinely ahead of his time as a social critic — They Live is still disturbingly on-the-nose. A true auteur who never got the mainstream recognition he deserved, and I'll die on that hill.
