John Hiatt

John Hiatt is, to me, a songwriter's songwriter. Born in Indianapolis in 1952, he absorbed new wave, blues, and country and forged them into something unmistakably his own. Nine Grammy nominations and a 2008 Americana Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting only hint at his standing. What I value most isn't chart success but the trust other artists place in his catalog, covering his songs again and again. He is sharp as a performer and deep as a writer, a combination that's genuinely scarce. I admire anyone who spends a whole life refining the craft of the song, and Hiatt is among the finest.
