My Take
John Laurinaitis is one of those guys who quietly had two fascinating careers and most casual fans only know him from one of them. As "Johnny Ace" he was a legitimate standout in All Japan Pro Wrestling during the 1990s, a big athletic American working a brutal heavyweight style in front of Japanese crowds who respected the craft — that alone is a cool story. But then he reinvented himself behind the scenes at WWE, rising to become Executive Vice President of Talent Relations, essentially the guy holding the keys to who got hired and fired. That kind of power shift — from taking bumps to signing talent — takes a sharp operator, and whatever you think of his on-screen heel GM persona, the real-life backstage influence was very real. A genuinely underappreciated two-act career.
