My Take
John Polson earns my respect less for his own credits than for what he built for others. Moving from acting into directing gave him an insider's feel for performance, but founding Tropfest in 1993 is the move I genuinely admire. Creating a launchpad where unknown short-film makers could be discovered is a generous, unglamorous act of leadership. Plenty of talented people chase the spotlight; far fewer cultivate the soil where new talent grows.
