My Take
Johnny Cash is, to my ears, the most honest voice American music ever produced. That cavernous baritone made sin, sorrow, and redemption feel like one continuous story, and the Folsom Prison recording remains my benchmark for what a live album can be: an artist standing with the condemned rather than above them. I love that his life arc, from the Arkansas cotton fields to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, reads like one of his own ballads. The Man in Black dressed for the forgotten, and decades after his death in 2003, nobody has filled that silhouette.
