My Take

Joni Mitchell is one of those artists where the more you actually listen — really listen — the more you realize how far ahead of everyone else she was. Born in small-town Alberta and trained as a painter, she brought a visual artist's eye to songwriting at a time when "folk music" was mostly campfire chords and protest slogans. Blue (1971) is, in my opinion, one of the five greatest albums ever made in any genre — raw, harmonically strange, and so emotionally precise it almost feels invasive. Her open guitar tunings alone spawned a whole generation of imitators who still can't quite crack what she was doing. The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — those accolades are real, but they somehow undersell her. She isn't a legend because she had a long career; she's a legend because she changed what a song is allowed to be.

Overview

Roberta Joan "Joni" Mitchell (née Anderson; born 7 November 1943) is a Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and painter. As one of the most influential singer-songwriters to emerge from the 1960s folk music circuit, Mitchell became known for her personal lyrics and unconventional compositions, which grew to incorporate elements of pop, jazz, rock, and other genres.
