My Take

Jorge Ben is one of those artists I think more people outside Brazil should know. Writing and singing his own material as a guitarist and composer since the early 1960s, he helped shape the sound of Brazilian popular music, and that body of work earned him both Brazil's Order of Cultural Merit and a 2005 Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. What I find admirable is the longevity, performing under the name Jorge Ben Jor since the 1980s while staying recognizably himself. To me he reads as a genuine craftsman of song, the kind whose influence quietly runs deeper than the casual listener realizes.
