Jūkichi Uno

Jukichi Uno, born Nobuo Terao in Fukui in 1914, was an actor, a director, and a builder of institutions. The line in his record that matters most to me is 1950, when he co-founded the Gekidan Mingei theatre company with Takizawa Osamu and others. Acting is a career that ends with the person; a company outlives them. Choosing to spend your prime years constructing something that will still be running after you are gone is a specific kind of ambition, and a quieter one than stardom. He also directed for film and stage, which suggests someone more interested in what the whole room was doing than in his own close-up. He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1981 and died in January 1988. Younger audiences may not recognize the name, and that is often the fate of people who build the ground rather than stand on it. The work is still there, though, in every company that came after.
