My Take
Julio César Chávez is, to me, the closest boxing ever got to a living national religion. A three-division world champion ranked pound-for-pound number one from 1990 to 1993, his appeal was never just the belts. What I admire is the relentless, grinding forward pressure, the very soul of Mexican boxing. Rising out of Baja California Sur, he carried that hardscrabble hunger into every round. Few athletes earn the word hero as honestly as he did, and his Hall of Fame induction feels almost like an understatement for what he meant to a country.
