Kamala

Kamala, born James Arthur Harris, occupies a complicated place in my memory of professional wrestling. The 6'7" Mississippi giant played "The Ugandan Giant," a barefoot, war-painted character that reads as deeply problematic by modern standards. Yet I can't deny the raw presence he brought to the ring; he sold that monstrous gimmick with total conviction. What lingers most is the contrast many recall between the fearsome persona and the gentle man behind it. He passed in 2020. I hold his career as a bittersweet artifact of an era, separating the troubling premise from the genuine performer who gave it everything.
