Kaori Mochida

I'll be honest, Kaori Mochida's voice is basically a time capsule for me, that crystal-clear yet quietly aching tone she brought to Every Little Thing pretty much is the sound of late-90s into 2000s J-pop in my head. There's something disarming about her, she's not the type to shout for attention, but the second she starts singing it lands square in your chest. Knowing she came up as a child actor in Tokyo's Koto ward, I get this sense she was always meant to be in front of people, just on her own gentle terms. And the fact that she writes too, putting her own words to those melodies, is exactly why it sticks, it feels lived-in rather than handed down. No flash, no fireworks, just a voice and some honest lines leaning in close. Total soft spot for her.
