My Take
I came to Kayoko Kishimoto through Takeshi Kitano, like most people outside Japan. She is in Hana-bi, Kikujiro and Dolls, and in each she does the hardest thing an actor can do: hold a frame while barely speaking. Kitano's films run on silence, and silence exposes anyone faking it. She never is. The shape of her career impresses me just as much. Born in Shimada, Shizuoka in 1960, she won the Elan d'or newcomer prize in 1981, barely out of her teens, then took Best Supporting Actress at the Japan Academy Prize for Kikujiro nearly twenty years later. Early promise usually burns off. Hers didn't.
