Kazuaki Kiriya

Kazuaki Kiriya fascinates me because he refuses to stay in one lane. Born in rural Kumamoto, he moved from photography into directing films and music videos with an unmistakably bold visual sensibility. His ambition to bring Hollywood-scale imagery into Japanese cinema drew both praise and criticism, but I respect that kind of swing-for-the-fences creativity. Artists who blur the line between the painterly and the cinematic interest me more than safe technicians. Whatever you make of his films, Kiriya is a genuine aesthete with a distinct eye, and I think his restless, multidisciplinary instinct is exactly what keeps a creative culture alive.
