Kazuto Taguchi

Kazuto Taguchi, born September 1995 in Saeki-ku, Hiroshima, currently pitches for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows after beginning his professional career with the Yomiuri Giants. Listed at 171 cm, he is small by the standards of a modern NPB pitching staff, which tells you something about how he has survived. A pitcher that size does not last on velocity alone; command, sequencing and an unwillingness to be intimidated do the work instead. The part of his career I find most interesting is the move itself. Changing organizations in Japanese baseball is not a routine transaction the way it can be elsewhere, and a pitcher who has established himself in one role at one club has to rebuild both his job and his standing somewhere new. That he has kept taking the ball through that transition is the real achievement, more than any single season line. I tend to watch players like this more closely than the ones who never had to adapt.
