Kazuya Tatekabe

Kazuya Tatekabe belongs to a category of performer I find endlessly interesting: the actor whose face most people cannot picture but whose voice they could identify in a second. Born in 1934 in Kimobetsu, Hokkaido, and raised in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, he studied at Nihon University and worked as an actor, voice actor, and later a talent manager — that last role telling you something about how he saw the profession, not just as performance but as a craft worth passing on. He performed under his birth-name spelling until 1977, after which the hiragana version became his signature. What strikes me most is the durability of voice work. Screen actors age out of their roles; a voice can occupy a character for decades and lodge itself permanently in a generation's childhood. He died in 2015 at eighty, and the strange, generous arithmetic of animation means the work simply kept playing. That is a rare kind of afterlife.
