Kazuyuki Shirai

Kazuyuki Shirai was born in Sanuki, Kagawa in 1961, went from Shido High School to Komazawa University, and played as an infielder in Nippon Professional Baseball. On the raw numbers, he was not the kind of player who ends up on a franchise poster. But baseball has a useful habit of turning that into an advantage later. Players who had to think their way through slumps, adjustments and roster insecurity often make far better coaches than the ones for whom everything came easily, because they can explain the mechanics of struggling from the inside. Shirai moved into coaching after retiring, and that second act is, to my mind, the more interesting half of the story. A 177 cm infielder from Shikoku, working his way to the top level and then handing the craft on to the next generation — it is not a flashy career shape, but organisations do not function without people who take it.
