Keiko Tsushima

I have such a soft spot for Keiko Tsushima, one of those quietly luminous faces from Japan's postwar golden age of cinema. Born in Nagasaki in 1926, she came up in an era when actresses didn't need to shout to hold a frame, and you can feel that restraint in her work, the way a glance or a held silence does more than a page of dialogue. To me she'll always be tied to Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, where she brought a real, aching humanity to the village, but it's her overall presence I keep coming back to, that calm, dignified screen warmth. She's been gone since 2012, but that's the lovely cruelty of film, she's still right there, perfectly preserved in glorious black and white. Honestly, what a gift of an actress.
