Keitaro Nakamura

Keitaro Nakamura — MMA fighter out of Katsushika, Tokyo — is exactly the kind of guy who makes you straighten up just hearing his name. There's something about someone who grew up in that old shitamachi part of Tokyo and chose to make their living with their fists and grappling skills that commands a quiet respect. At 180 cm he carries himself like someone who has absorbed a lot of punishment and given back even more, and there's a stillness to fighters like him that you don't really see in other athletes. MMA is brutal and honest; you can't fake your way through a fight, and guys who stick around in that world into their forties have a kind of iron in their spine that I find genuinely admirable. Katsushika raised him, the cage tested him — I'm rooting for this one.
