My Take
Keito Matsuura was born in July 2003 in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, lived through the 2011 earthquake and tsunami there as a young child and moved to Asahikawa in Hokkaido, and later played at Osaka Toin High School. That last detail carries more weight than it looks like from outside Japan. Osaka Toin is one of the country's great baseball powerhouses, and it draws talent nationally. For a teenager from Miyagi, going there meant leaving home and stepping straight into a room full of the best players his age. Whatever else his career becomes, that decision was not a small one. The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters took him in the seventh round of the 2021 draft, he debuted in 2022, and the Yomiuri Giants picked him up in the December 2025 active-player draft, so the left-hander's story is far from finished.
