Kengo Yoshida

Yoshida was born in 2001 in Isogo, Yokohama, came out of Yokohama College of Commerce High School and Toin University of Yokohama, where he was named league MVP, was drafted by the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in the sixth round in 2022, and is now a catcher for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. Catcher is the position I find hardest to be young in. A shortstop can be brilliant on raw reflex at twenty-two; a catcher has to earn the trust of an entire pitching staff, most of whom are older than he is, and then take responsibility for how a game is constructed pitch by pitch. That is credibility you cannot shortcut, which is exactly why a young catcher holding a job at this level is a genuine signal. Nippon-Ham in particular has a long habit of handing real responsibility to young players earlier than most organizations would dare, and trusting them to grow into it in public. I expect his story to look very different in five years.
