Kento Hayashi

Kento Hayashi is the rare child actor who kept getting more interesting instead of less. He arrived in 2007 as the lead in Battery, a boy's role in a boy's story, and plenty of young actors never escape that first impression. He did, and the work has only deepened with age. His Ryota Maki in Ossan's Love was a genuinely delicate piece of acting, the kind that could easily have collapsed into caricature and never did. He is from Otsu in Shiga, 173 cm, and was never going to dominate a scene physically. He works with his eyes and his timing instead. There is no long row of trophies attached to his name, and I do not think that is the measure here. When I see him in a cast list I relax, because I know at least one performance in the thing will hold. That kind of trust is hard to earn.
