Kento Itohara

Kento Itohara is the kind of player who never trends online, and that is exactly why I find him interesting. A Meiji University product who became an infielder for the Hanshin Tigers, he built a career on the unglamorous parts of baseball: working a count, moving a runner over, handling the routine grounder that nobody remembers unless it is muffed. At 175 cm he is not physically imposing by professional standards, which makes the persistence more impressive to me than any highlight reel would. Hanshin fans are famously loud and famously demanding, and players like Itohara tend to hear their names most often when things are going badly. That is an unfair bargain, but it is also proof of how much the team leans on that steady presence. I would rather watch a full season of a player like this than a month of someone who only shows up in the box score.
