Kiyotaka Sugiyama

Kiyotaka Sugiyama is one of those voices that arrives with a season attached. Born in 1959 in Isogo, Yokohama, he broke through in 1983 as the frontman of S. Kiyotaka & Omega Tribe, the band that helped define the sun-bleached, breezy end of Japanese city pop. When the group dissolved in 1985, he could easily have spent the rest of his life as a nostalgia act. Instead he launched a solo career in 1986 and has kept it running ever since. That is the part I find quietly impressive. Effortlessness is expensive to maintain. A summer song sounds like it cost nothing to make, and the performer who sings it is expected to stay just as light decades later, long after the summer in question ended. Sugiyama has carried that expectation without visibly straining under it. Listeners abroad discovering city pop through algorithms tend to treat these records as artifacts. He is not an artifact. He is still working.
