Kōta Miura

Kota Miura, born in Kobe in 2002, carries a surname that guarantees attention: his father is the footballer Kazuyoshi Miura. Choosing mixed martial arts of all things strikes me as either very brave or very stubborn, because a cage settles arguments in seconds and nobody grades you gently for being young and famous. He came up through Waseda Jitsugyo, hardly the usual pipeline for a fighter. He skipped university to live in his gym's dormitory, won his Rizin debut on New Year's Eve 2021 with a soccer-ball kick, and has since taken real losses, so I am not going to pretend I have a verdict. What I respect is that he knew the crowd would come for the name and walked in anyway.
