Kotoshōhō Yoshinari

Kotoshoho, born Toshiki Tebakari in Kashiwa, Chiba, made his sumo debut in November 2017 and reached the top makuuchi division by May 2020. That is quick; most wrestlers grind through the lower ranks far longer. He fights out of Sadogatake stable, which is why the character koto sits at the front of his ring name, and his highest rank so far is sekiwake. What impresses me is not the climb but the staying. The banzuke is recalculated every two months, and holding a place near the top is harder than reaching it once. No dramatic legend attaches to his name. He simply keeps showing up, which in sumo is its own kind of feat.
