Lake Bell

Lake Bell is far more than the polished comic actress she is often reduced to. A New Yorker who writes, directs, and produces, she belongs to the camp of performers who got tired of waiting for good roles and started building worlds themselves. I love her comic timing in things like Boston Legal and What Happens in Vegas, but it is her authorship that earns my respect, choosing to be the architect rather than just the hire. Add her well-documented obsession with the human voice, and you get a genuinely idiosyncratic artist. I always root for creators who refuse to stay in their assigned lane.
